The Automation major of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology was established in 1972. In 1998, the major was officially renamed the Automation. It is one of the first distinctive majors of our university and is designated as a university-level key construction major as well as a university-level Double First-Class construction major. In 2020, it was approved as a first-class undergraduate program construction site in Shaanxi Province. In 2022, it received accreditation from the China Engineering Education Certification, and in the same year, it was approved as a national-level first-class undergraduate program construction site. The Automation major currently has 21 faculty members and 12 technical staff members. Among the professional faculty, there are 5 professors and 11 associate professors. This includes 1 provincial-level teaching master, 1 recipient of the Baogang Education Award, 1 young research star in Shaanxi Province, 1 exemplary young teacher at the university level, and 3 rising star young teachers in the university.

The Automation major has the following facilities and laboratories to provide high-quality training and technology innovation opportunities for students:

1. A provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration center: Information Technology Laboratory.

2. A distinctive and advantageous subject laboratory co-built by the province and the university: Intelligent Building Environment Technology Experimental Platform.

3. A key laboratory in Xi'an city: Xi'an Key Laboratory of Smart Building Manufacturing Technology.

4. A base for student scientific and technological innovation activities.

5. Six school-enterprise cooperation laboratories.

The students trained in this major should possess strong abilities in acquiring knowledge and applying it comprehensively. They should also be capable of identifying, analyzing, and solving real-world engineering problems. They should have a broad foundation of engineering and specialized knowledge in fields such as control theory, motion control, signal acquisition and processing technology, process control, computer control technology, and power electronics technology. These students should be prepared to work in areas such as artificial intelligence and automation, robotics engineering, motion control, process control, building automation, and computer applications. They can engage in tasks related to system analysis, design, integration, development, operation, and management. Additionally, they can pursue further education in higher education institutions and research organizations both in China and abroad.

The Automation major, grounded in the industry and making the most of interdisciplinary advantages, has developed and accumulated over nearly 47 years. It has established a comprehensive discipline hierarchy and a continually improving talent cultivation mechanism. The program has been dedicated to establishing specialized directions with interdisciplinary features, bridging the Automation major with other core fields of our university such as civil engineering, architecture, and metallurgy. It has achieved significant teaching and research outcomes and cultivated well-rounded, practical, and innovative applied technology professionals in the field of artificial intelligence and automation. Since its establishment, this program has trained over 4,000 individuals who possess both moral integrity and technical expertise in engineering, technology, and science management for the nation. Many graduates have gone on to become leaders in large national enterprises and institutions, nationally recognized experts who have made outstanding contributions, as well as key personnel in factories, mines, and research institutes. They have played a vital role in contributing to the development of the country, particularly in the western regions.
