4. The academic paper of Associate Professor Wang Binglu was included in the top international conference CVPR in the field of computer science.

Recently, the research of Associate Professor Wang Binglu from the School of Information and Control Engineering of our university, titled “GaTector: A Unified Framework for Gaze Object Prediction,” has been accepted by the international top conference CVPR (CCFA class). Professor Wang Binglu is the first author and corresponding author of the paper, and Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology is the only completing unit of the paper. This achievement is also the first article published by our university at CVPR, marking a breakthrough in the publication of academic achievements in the field of information disciplines at international top conferences. Gaze behavior is an important aspect of human social behavior and has strong research significance, but there is a lack of a unified solution framework for this task. An intuitive solution is to add an object detection branch to the existing gaze estimation methods. However, existing gaze estimation usually use two different networks to extract features from the scene and head images, which will result in overly complex network structures and prevent joint optimization of each branch. Therefore, the paper proposes a new framework called GaTector to address the problem of gaze object prediction in a unified manner. First, this paper proposes a Specific-General-Specific (SGS) feature extractor, which uses a shared backbone to extract general features from scene and head images. Considering the specificity of different sub-networks, SGS introduces two specific input processing layers before the shared backbone and three different output processing layers after the shared backbone. Then, this paper designs a novel defocus structure to generate specific object features for the object detection task without losing information and additional computational cost. In addition, the framework introduces energy aggregation loss to achieve joint optimization of different sub-networks. Finally, this paper proposes a new mDAP metric, which can reveal the differences between different bounding boxes even if there is no overlapping area between them. The superiorities of the proposed method in the tasks of object detection, gaze estimation, and gaze object prediction are verified through extensive experiments on the GOO dataset. CVPR stands for the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. The conference, which began in 1983, is a top conference in the fields of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and pattern recognition. In recent years, the average acceptance rate of the conference is about 25%. According to the latest academic journal and conference impact rankings published by Google Scholar in 2021, CVPR ranks fourth among all academic publications, surpassing The Lancet and second only to Nature, NEJM, and Science.

5. School of Information and Control Engineering held an academic seminar on “Embracing the Era of Intelligent Innovation” on intelligent technology and innovative applications.

To broaden the research horizon and improve research capabilities, on 7th, the School of Information and Control Engineering invited Professor Zeng Dajun, a researcher at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Wang Lei, a postdoctoral fellow at the National Information Center and a researcher at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to conduct research exchanges and academic reports. Wu Hao, the secretary of the school party committee, and some teacher representatives participated in the research exchange meeting, and Professor Song Lijun presided over the meeting.

At the exchange meeting, Professor Zeng Dajun combined the national development plan from the 12th Five-Year Plan to the 14th Five-Year Plan to introduce the future development of research directions. He mentioned three points: First, researchers should establish research goals and clarify research directions based on the national strategic department, the key work of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the top research projects, and the research system. Second, researchers should return to the original intention of research and take solving major national needs as the guide in research work, using scientific methods to fully reflect new research discoveries. Third, researchers should face challenges bravely, open up innovative ideas, strengthen cooperation with enterprises, and improve the integrity and feasibility of research projects.

Teacher representatives made reports and exchanges based on their own research directions, and discussed and learned from Professor Zeng Dajun about the bottleneck problems encountered in the research process. The teacher representatives stated that in the future research process, they will actively explore solutions to the bottleneck problems in national development, actively explore, and make contributions to the development of the school with the spirit of being determined to complete a task.

In the afternoon of the same day, the School of Information and Control Engineering held an academic seminar on “Intelligent Technology and Innovation Application in the Era of Intelligent Innovation” in Room 606 of the Information and Control Building. Professor Zeng Dajun made a report titled “Policy Intelligence - Key Scientific Issues and Technological Research.” Teacher representatives from the school and more than 70 graduate students attended the seminar.

Professor Zeng Dajun fully explained policy intelligence from the perspectives of his own research direction and research achievements, focusing on policy intelligence, social computing, multi-agent systems, and adversarial games. He shared the methods and applications of related issues and technologies, enriching the research knowledge of the faculty and students and broadening new research ideas.

Wang Lei gave a presentation titled “Discussion on Data Intelligence Technology and Product Innovation and Entrepreneurship,” focusing on the development of big data and artificial intelligence technology. He shared the application of data intelligence technology and products in the industry based on the entrepreneurial experience of ZhongkeWenge, and discussed the next steps for innovation and development, providing valuable opinions for students’ entrepreneurship, career choices, and personal development.
